A cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder — a small, pear-shaped organ beneath your liver that stores bile. It is one of the most commonly performed abdominal surgeries worldwide, typically completed laparoscopically through 3–4 tiny incisions (3–5 mm each).
In Mexico, our surgeons use the same advanced laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques available at major U.S. medical centers — at a fraction of the cost. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes under general anesthesia, with most patients going home the same day or the following morning.
3–4 tiny incisions instead of a large open cut. Less pain, faster healing.
Most cases completed in under 1.5 hours under general anesthesia.
Majority of patients go home 4–8 hours after surgery.
Short recovery makes this ideal for medical tourism patients.
Common Reasons for Gallbladder Removal
Most cholecystectomies are performed to treat symptomatic gallstones (cholelithiasis) or gallbladder inflammation. Other indications include:
Conditions Treated
- Gallstones (Cholelithiasis) — Stones blocking bile flow, causing pain after meals
- Acute Cholecystitis — Sudden gallbladder inflammation, often from a blocked duct
- Chronic Cholecystitis — Repeated inflammation leading to a scarred, non-functional gallbladder
- Biliary Colic — Episodic, intense pain in the upper right abdomen
- Gallbladder Polyps — Polyps >10 mm with cancer risk
- Biliary Dyskinesia — Poor gallbladder emptying function
Symptoms That Indicate Surgery
- Severe upper-right abdominal pain (especially after fatty meals)
- Pain radiating to right shoulder or back
- Nausea and vomiting after eating
- Fever and chills (sign of infection)
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
- Recurrent attacks not controlled by diet or medication
Laparoscopic vs. Open Cholecystectomy
Our surgeons perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy as the gold standard. Open surgery is reserved for rare, complex cases (e.g., severe adhesions from prior surgeries, suspected malignancy, or anatomic complications).
| Feature | Laparoscopic ✅ | Open Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Incisions | 3–4 tiny ports (3–5 mm) | One large incision (10–15 cm) |
| Hospital Stay | Same-day / 1 night | 2–4 days |
| Return to Activities | 1–2 weeks | 4–6 weeks |
| Pain Level | Mild (managed with oral meds) | Moderate to significant |
| Scarring | Minimal (near-invisible) | Visible scar |
| Risk of Complications | Very low (<2%) | Higher |
| When Chosen | Standard — 99% of cases | Anatomical complexity / emergency |
The 5-Step Laparoscopic Procedure
You are comfortably asleep. No pain during surgery. Anesthesiologist monitors you throughout.
The abdomen is gently inflated with CO₂ gas to create working space for the camera and instruments.
3–4 small ports (3–5 mm) are inserted. A HD laparoscope is passed through one port for visualization.
The cystic duct and cystic artery are identified, clipped, and divided. The gallbladder is carefully dissected from the liver bed and extracted through a port.
Ports are removed, incisions closed with absorbable sutures. You recover in a monitored room for 2–4 hours before discharge.
